TSDL domestic 2009-10 season Review

The curtain came down on another very successful domestic campaign in the Tipperary Southern & District League for season 2009-10 last Sunday week. Despite the indifferent weather that caused headaches for Fixture Secretary Tom Lewis, who still managed to keep everything moving and it is a credit also to all the teams that co-operated to make sure this season like every other season finished on time.

Premier League

For the first time since the introduction of the Premier League in 1992-93 neither of the TSDL ‘Big 2’; holders Clonmel Town nor St. Michael's failed to win or even take the runners-up spot in what was an exciting run-in.

Instead it was a Peake Villa side under the management team of former players Padraig O’Dwyer, Danny Dunne and Danny Hickey, that brought the Liam Delahunty Perpetual Cup back to Thurles nine years after winning their only other championship.

Clonmel Celtic, who retained the Tipperary Challenge Cup with victory over Rock Rovers, secured the runners-up spot for the first time having been in contention for the League and Cup ‘double’ right up to the final league game.

League Division 1

League Division 1 saw Galbally United hold off the challenge of Wilderness Rovers, Rosegreen Rangers and St. Nicholas to lift a historic first title and return to top flight football having lasted a season in 2007-08. The Co. Limerick side also lifted their First Shield Division crown.

With Old Bridge being relegated from the Premier League they will be replaced by another Clonmel club with Wilderness Rovers making history by reaching top flight football for the first time.

League Division 2

League Division 2 saw two sides that were relegated in season 2008-2009 making a quick return up a tier. Moyglass United pulled off a historic ‘treble’ not only winning their first championship, but were also first time winners of the Paddy Purtill Cup and the Division 2 Shield.

Moyglass United will be joined by Kilmanahan United.

Glengoole United were Shield Division 3 winners beating Clonmel Celtic B in a penalty shoot-out.

League Division 3

League Division Three saw Cashel Town B making club history by lifting their first divisional title at this level and very first Shield title. They will be joined by Glen Villa who had to defeat fellow relegated side Cullen-Lattin to take the runners-up spot.

Burncourt Celtic collected their first piece of silverware lifting the Peter O’Reilly Cup after overcoming Peake Villa B.

League Division 4

League Division 4 saw another piece of history being made with Cahir Park B winning their first divisional title and along with newcomers Kilbehenny Celtic will make their debut in Division 3 next season.

Clerihan FC won their first piece of silverware lifting the 3 Division Shield defeating Dualla FC.

Youth Football

This season the Umbro Joe Delaney Cup, that has been an outstanding success since its introduction in 2006, was retained by St.Michael's of Tipperary town who defeated Cahir Park. Both these sides had seen off FAI Youth Cup semi-finalists Nenagh AFC and Munster Youth Cup holders Clonmel Town respectively at the semi-final stage.

Youth League Division 1

St. Michael's AFC, who were to the forefront of Under 18 football for many years, retained the TSDL Youth League championship and went on to complete a unique ‘treble’ by lifting the Tipperary Youth Cup and foremention Joe Delaney Cup.

Youth League Division 2

Clerihan AFC lifted the Youth League Division 2 title for the first time and then went on to complete the ‘double’ by retaining the Youth Division 2 Cup.
