The current TSDL Committee paid a heartfelt tribute to seven long-serving officers at a special presentation recognising their outstanding dedication and service to football in Tipperary.
Tommy Lewis, Richard Power, Benny Tynan, Christy Aylward, Michael “Mickey” Halpin, Gay Lowry and Liam Clohessehy were honoured for the time, energy and commitment they have given to the league and its clubs over many years.
Tommy, Richard, Benny and Christy were present to receive their awards. Colm Lonergan read a message from Mickey Halpin, who was unfortunately unable to attend due to illness. Everyone associated with the league sends Mickey their warmest wishes.
Speaking on the night, David Hasset thanked the retiring officers for their tremendous contribution to the TSDL, acknowledging their hard work across the past 50 years and wishing them every happiness in retirement.
Their service has helped shape the league, supporting generations of players, clubs and volunteers. They are a credit to Tipperary football and leave a legacy of dedication, friendship and pride.

A Community Rising Together – Past, Present & Future
In the heart of Kilsheelan village stands a club whose story is woven through the people, the parish, and a shared love of football. Slievenamon Celtic/Kilsheelan United FC (SC&K United) is far more than a team—it is a grassroots success story built on resilience, volunteers, and a community that has never stopped believing in what football can bring to local life.
Today, the club proudly represents 256 registered players, 25 coaches, and 11 teams ranging from Under-6s right up to two competitive junior sides. But this thriving organisation began as something much smaller.
A Club Born From Local Spirit
Founded in 1993, the club—then known simply as Kilsheelan United—started with one junior team and one pitch: White Field, behind the Ormond Stores. Their first ever victory, a 1–0 friendly win over Rathgormack thanks to a strike from Roger Doyle (today a member of the Junior A management team), is still fondly remembered as the moment that lit the fire.
By 1995/96, the young club had earned its first promotion, finishing runners-up in Division 3 and stepping proudly into Division 2. The foundations were laid, and the community roots deepened.
2013: The Spark That Transformed Everything
While Kilsheelan has long been a GAA heartland, football began to pull families and children into something new. Interest exploded in 2013, allowing the club to field their first underage sides (U6, U9, U11) with 39 young players participating in that inaugural schoolkids season.
From this moment, the club’s identity began to evolve. By 2017, the schoolboys section officially became Slievenamon Celtic FC—a name chosen through a competition across local primary schools. The colours and crest were designed by the children who would grow up wearing them.
That same year marked the club’s first major underage triumph: the TSSDL U13 Division 1 title, secured thanks to a dramatic injury-time equaliser from Darragh Landers. That moment has become folklore, and the legacy continues—both Landers and Daniel Condon progressed all the way through the club to make their junior debuts in 2023.
One Club, One Vision – The 2022 Amalgamation
A defining moment arrived in 2022, when Slievenamon Celtic and Kilsheelan United formally united under a single identity, a single committee, and a single purpose: to build a sustainable, community-driven football structure from academy to adult level.
This move has accelerated progress in every direction—from facilities to coaching, from fundraising to youth development. The impact has been profound, and nowhere more evident than in the meteoric rise of girls’ football.
The Trailblazing U12 Girls of 2025
If one team captured the imagination of the village this past year, it was undoubtedly the U12 Girls.
In their debut competitive season, they produced an extraordinary run to the SFAI National Trophy quarter-finals, before achieving a historic League and Cup Double. Their success has inspired a wave of new young players and strengthened the pathway toward expanded girls’ football, including the club’s U14 squad, who are preparing to step into U16 competition next season.
The future of women’s football in Kilsheelan has never looked brighter.
LEAGUE OF IRELAND CONNECTIONS – PATHWAYS & PRIDE
SC&K United has nurtured strong ties with Waterford FC, bringing groups of young supporters to the RSC each season and regularly providing ball-kids for matchdays.
The club has also proudly watched several players take the step toward League of Ireland academies:
Oisin Lavin, former U13 goalkeeper, joined Cobh Ramblers in 2019—the club’s first ever LOI signing. Today, he coaches the Youths side.
Lukey Condon and Callum Slattery moved to CK United’s U14s in 2023, with Slattery now starring for Waterford FC, while Condon has returned to represent SC&K United at Youth and Junior level.
These pathways are not just achievements—they are symbols of belief for every young player wearing the club crest.

Community momentum after the amalgamation was rewarded quickly. In 2023, the junior side captured the Peter O’Reilly Cup, beating Moyglass United 3–0 and ending a decade-long wait for silverware.

Club Chairperson Fiachra Fahy, who succeeded long-serving leader David Lavin in 2023, shared his thoughts on the road ahead:
“It’s a real honour to serve as Chairperson of Slievenamon Celtic/Kilsheelan United FC. The club continues to grow and I feel we provide a great environment for all involved—from the very youngest to our more senior teams. We will keep striving to improve our facilities and to encourage everyone in our community to engage with the club. We look forward to the 2026 season with exciting plans already in progress.”
DEVELOPMENT PLANS – LAYING FOUNDATIONS FOR THE FUTURE
With underage teams based at KBK Sportsfield and the TSDL sides competing at the long-standing Ormond Stores pitch, securing the club’s long-term home remains a core priority.
The committee has worked tirelessly for 18 months to secure a long-term lease and advance facility upgrades that would safeguard the club’s future.
This year also marked a major milestone as the club officially achieved FAI Club Mark accreditation, recognising excellence in governance, coaching, child welfare, and organisational standards—a significant achievement for a growing rural club.

Burncourt Celtic FC began life in 1998 with a simple, powerful idea: give people in the Burncourt area a football club they could call their own. What followed has been a quarter-century of graft and growth—junior football on borrowed fields, schoolboys and schoolgirls pouring in with new energy, and a steady climb through milestones that speak to resilience as much as results.

Today, Burncourt Celtic’s heartbeat is as strong as ever. The junior side competes in the TSDL Third Division, the underage arm—now proudly known as Shanbally United—thrives with 11 teams and 200+ registered players, and the club’s home at Ballyhurrow, Burncourt stands as a testament to what good neighbours and tireless volunteers can achieve together.

Roots in the Soil (1998–2005)
The story starts in 1998. Burncourt Celtic entered a junior team into the North Cork Soccer League, a foundational stretch that gave the club its first taste of weekly football, community buzz, and the rhythms of grassroots sport. In 2005, the club formally joined the Tipperary Southern & District League, putting down deeper roots in a competition that would become the primary canvas for its ambitions.
Those early years were as much about place as they were about play. Burncourt Celtic relied on the generosity of local landowners—Richard Brett, Oliver Keating, and Richard Maher—to host matches. Pitches changed; the commitment didn’t. “We’ll find a way” became the unofficial motto.
Milestones That Mattered
Burncourt Celtic’s timeline is dotted with moments that shifted mindsets and standards:
2007/08 — Promotion from Division 4, clinched by winning the final seven games to grab second place.
2008 — The launch of the club’s first schoolboys teams.
2010 — The Peter O’Reilly Cup, the club’s first piece of silverware.
2013 — Third Division Shield champions.
2016 — A national FAI visit to the club’s grounds, a proud marker of progress.

Each success was a building block; each setback, a lesson. Together they formed the club’s identity: rural, resilient, and relentlessly forward-looking.
Shanbally United: One Youth, Two Homes
By 2008, the club doubled down on underage football. Teams sprang up across nearly every age group—boys and girls—and participation soared. But rural football has its realities: numbers fluctuate, geography matters, and sustainability for each age cohort can be a challenge.
In 2015, Burncourt Celtic and neighbours Vee Rovers did something smart: they joined forces at schoolboy level. Initially, teams played under the Burncourt/Vee banner. Soon, a shared identity was born—Shanbally United—with a crest acknowledging both junior clubs and colours of navy, red, and white. Committee stalwarts Richard Burke and John Bailey led the setup, ensuring Shanbally United stood on its own feet administratively while drawing on the strength of both parent clubs.

Today, Shanbally United fields 11 teams from U7 to Youths, split between both grounds—half based at Vee Rovers, half at Burncourt Celtic—and coached by a dedicated group that puts development before everything. The pathway is working Caleb Ademisiti made the South Tipp Kennedy Cup squad, with Aaron Tobin selected for the U13 South Tipperary panel—signposts that the talent pipeline is real and rising.

The Junior Team: A Young Core, Guided by Experience
Burncourt Celtic’s Junior team—now in the TSDL Third Division—is led by manager Gerard O’Dwyer, in his third season at the helm. O’Dwyer has staked the project on youth: energetic, local, eager to learn. Around them, a set of stalwarts—Pa Ryan, James Mulcahy, Dave Baker, and Pat Quinn—provide nous, calm, and a sense of standards.
O’Dwyer’s commitment goes beyond tactics. Through OD Civil Engineering, he has also been a practical supporter of the club’s wider efforts—another example of how Burncourt Celtic blends football with community responsibility.
On the pitch, signs are promising. A solid start to the season has been matched by cup momentum: Munster Junior Shield wins over Killenaule Rovers and Rearcross have set up a tantalising third-round tie against near neighbours Vee Rovers. A short trip to Scart in two weeks’ time promises a derby day thick with local colour.

If the playing model is the club’s heart, Ballyhurrow is the lungs. Since 2019, Burncourt Celtic has called Ballyhurrow, Burncourt home under a long-term lease—a critical foundation for everything else the club wants to build.
None of it would have been possible without the help, guidance, and support of Brian Casey and family, whose welcome enabled a full grounds upgrade: new pitch, perimeter fencing, ball-stop netting, and a car park. Add in funding from the TSDL, Sports Capital Programme, County Council grants, and a host of local sponsors, and you get a community facility that reflects community effort.

Burncourt National School let us use their Astro pitch for which we are forever grateful, it is wonderful to see these facilities being shared amongst the community.Behind the scenes, consistent upkeep has been powered by years of public support schemes. For 15 years, the club benefited from the TÚS Scheme; this year, it’s the Rural Social Scheme, with Gerry O’Callaghan keeping everything shipshape—quiet work, vital impact.

Fundraising: The Lifeblood
Burncourt Celtic is frank about it: fundraising keeps the lights on. Two initiatives have become staples:
Last Man Standing — the current headline fundraiser that adds a competitive twist to club support.
The 50/50 Draw — running every fortnight since 2018, a steady pulse of community giving and community winning.
Tickets are available online via Superpay, and over the counter at Creed’s Shop, Ryan’s Bar, and Butler’s Bar in Burncourt. Its old-fashioned goodwill meets modern convenience—and it works.
