Cork City end Peake Villa’s dream
Cork City 3 Peake Villa 1
PEAKE VILLA’S hopes of being the first club from Thurles to lift a national soccer title ended in tatters as the Tipperary Southern & District League current league and cup double winners were beaten by Cork City in the final of the Snickers FAI Youth Cup at a packed Cooke Park, Tipperary Town on Saturday evening.
Cork went ahead in the 18th minute Damien Delaney despatched a 20 yard free kick to the net. In the 25th minute Peake Villa equalised when Ted O’Connor held off a defender before letting fly from an acute angle and the ball deflected off Shane Browne into the back of the net. Villa’s Derek Breen was called into action as he saved low from Damien Roddis as Cork City tried to regain their territorial advantage but it was the battling Thurles club who almost stole the lead when a well hit shot by Ted O’Connor skimmed the wrong side of the crossbar with keeper Seamus O’Donnell beaten.
Peake Villa, defender David Horan couldn’t get out of the way of Alan Bennett’s speculative shot and guided it past his stranded keeper to regain Cork City’s slender advantage. Then like a bolt out of the blue, Cork City got the insurance goal in the 68th minute when Villa were caught pushing forward and Alan Molloy exploited the space before releasing an unstoppable shot into the top corner of the net from the edge of the area.
Then with five minutes left, Cork City were reduced to ten as Joe Gamble was sent off for a second bookable offence but it was too late for Peake Villa to use their numerical advantage.
