‘The Road to the Aviva’
The hunt begins this weekend for the Holy Grail of junior soccer otherwise known as the FAI Junior Cup. This prestigious competition is sponsored this season, not only by Umbro, but by the Aviva and as part of the centenary celebrations of the FAI Junior Council in 2013 the Aviva Stadium will stage the Final next May.
Regarded as one of the biggest knockout competitions in Europe it will see over 600 teams from all four corners of Ireland battling it out to etch their name for season 2012-2013 on the most coveted prize.
Will it be former winners St. Michael’s FC or Clonmel Town, or the likes of Clonmel Celtic go one step further than last season, or could there be a surprise packet from this area?
Like last season the 48 teams will contest 3 ‘local’ Rounds covering teams from the West Waterford/East Cork League (WWEC), North Tipperary & District League (NTDL) and the Tipperary Southern & District League (TSDL). The TSDL has the most with 25 teams, NTDL has 18 teams and the WWEC with 5 teams.
The last 6 standing after the ‘local’ rounds will advance to the ‘Open Draw’ or last 64 stage. (see fixtures)
