FAI Junior Cup 2nd Round, 15th October 2023 Match Reports

Clonmel Celtic 7 – 2 Powerstown

Clonmel Celtic eased through to the next round of the FAI Junior Cup after a seven goals to two win over Powerstown on Sunday, on a perfect day for football at the bypass. On the front foot right from the get go, they took the lead in the tenth minute when Cian O Sullivan reacted fastest in the box to a bouncing ball and fired home from ten yards. But the visitors were only behind for three minutes, as they were awarded a penalty that veteran Gino Lonergan made no mistake with. O Sullivan bagged his second goal just before the half hour mark, but only a minute later a lapse in the Celtic defence allowed Ronan Quigley to equalise once again. But the hosts shrugged off this mistake and immediately went back upfield where Andrew Browne restored their lead, one they would take with them to the half time break. Seven minutes into the second period Seanie Hawkins made it four to two, and with this cushion they began to really control the game. Ten minutes later, Hawkins got his second after a lovely through ball by Dean Mcglaughlin. Powerstown never threw in the towel with Aaron Kiely working tirelessly up front, but with ten minutes last Darren Sweeny got in on the scoring act for the hosts, when he turned home Wayne Lazlett’s effort that had rebounded off the post. Micheal Cooper made it seven to Celtic in the final minutes with a cool finish.

Cashel Town 5 – 1 Killavilla United

Cashel welcomed North Tipperary side Killavilla to Palmershill on Sunday with a certain amount of trepidation, but that was misplaced when they ran out easy victors over the in form NTDL side. The home side had a fast start to thank for laying the foundations of their win, and they flew out of the blocks opening the scoring in the tenth minute when Kyle Ryan tucked away a nice finish after some good build up play. It was two five minutes later when a really good passing move was finished by Ryan again, with his movement causing the away side all sorts of problems. Dominant now, they made it three on the half hour marked when Lee Riordan finished off a well worked short corner routine. And on the stroke of half time, the game was pretty much put to bed as a contest when the home side got a fourth when Riordan was on the scoresheet again, finishing tidily after getting in behind the Killavilla defence. The second half was a closer affair with the visitors keeping to their task despite being behind, pulling a goal back after sixty five minutes, when Ian Treacy netted. But Cashel were never going to give up their stranglehold on the game and added a fifth five minutes from time when Lee Riordan completed his hat trick, to send his side through to the next round.

Clonmel Town 0 – 2 Two Mile Borris

Town’s annus horribilis continued on Sunday when they were dumped out of the FAI Junior Cup by fellow Premier League side Two Mile Borris. The visitors were good value for their win, against a depleted Town side, who were always going to be up against it. Town started well and had chances to go in front early on, but were rocked back on their heels midway through the half when Jamie Carey struck for the visitors. Shell shocked after this, the hosts seemed to retreat into their shells, and were unable to muster a shot in anger before the half time whistle. The second half was littered with mistakes coupled with poor passing and decision making from Town, and it was Borris who doubled their lead when Jamie Lee pounced to punish a Town defensive lapse from a long kick out, with twenty minutes left on the clock. The home side deserve some credit for battling until the end, but ultimately lacked the clinical ability of their opponents, who will now look for a good draw to draw to win out into the open draw stages of this prestigious competition.

St Nicholas 2 – 3 Clodiagh Rangers

TSDL Second Division side St Nicholas welcomed NTDL Premier League side Clodiagh Rangers to Danny O Dwyer Park in Solohead, and were unlucky to lose out by the odd goal in five in an entertaining FAI Junior Cup tie on Sunday. The home team started well and pinned their opponents back in the early part of the game, missing some chances, and they were left to rue those misses when the visitors took the lead in the twenty ninth minute through a David Butler goal, after he finished low into the net. Only two minutes later though, the Saints were back on terms when they were awarded a free kick that Declan Riordan landed on the head of his brother Aiden to head to the net and level matters all over again. But while the home side were barely finished celebrating the equaliser, they found themselves behind again when Rangers Brian Hanrahan struck a brilliant effort from outside the box to give the home keeper no chance of stopping. This was how the game went to the break, and though the second half started evenly, eventually the home side began to get on top and make the better chances. They finally converted to level the game again player manager Micheal Maguire who subbed himself in, set up Roger O Connor to level seventeen minutes from time. Both sides battled hard to find a winner late on, and just as it seemed the game might be running out to extra time, disaster struck for the home side when Brian Hanrahan got a winner two minutes from time for the away side, a goal that decided the game in the end.

Ardcroney 1 – 5 St Michael’s

TSDL side St Michael’s had to come from behind in this cup tie against North Tipperary side Ardcroney, but they ultimately did enough to ensure safe passage in a competition they came so close to winning last season. They started well and came close to opening the scoring twice in the first five minutes, with a Russell Quirke effort and Shane Ryan seeing a shot hit the crossbar before being cleared to safety. The home side finally settled and took a surprise lead in the fourteenth minute when a poor back pass allowed Jamie Ryan get a shot away to beat Adrian Walsh. The away side didn’t panic and were back on terms ten minutes later after they were awarded a penalty which Jimmy Carr converted. They took the lead three minutes after that when Ed O’Dwyer poked the ball home from close range. But the North Tipperary side didn’t fold and Aido Walsh did well to gather the ball from Jack Daly seven minutes before the break. Ultimately however Micheal’s went to half time in front, and came out firing in the early part of the second people. Ashley Kelliher, Mikey Nash and Cian Fadden all went close before they added a third in the sixty-eight minute when they were awarded a second penalty kick after Jimmy Carr was fouled in the area, and he got back up to knock home his second from the spot. This seemed to knock the stuffing out of the home side and they added a fourth in the seventy second minute when DJ Cremins rose highest to head home a cross from the ever-dangerous Carr. Colin Bargary was unlucky in the seventy fifth minute to see an effort come back off the post, but he made amends five minutes later when he scored to make it five to one and finally end the game as a contest.

Cahir Park 1 – 0 Bansha Celtic

Kevin Dempsey scored in just the second minute of this game, but it was a long slog to the finish in a nervy tie before Cahir booked their place in the next round. The only goal of the game when Stephen Quinn put a pin point free kick on the head of Dempsey and he made no mistake from six yards out. After this the home side dominated the next twenty minutes or so, but when Bansha had weathered that storm, they were offered a gilt edged opportunity to level matters from the penalty spot. Their nerve deserted them however and the penalty was missed, leaving the hosts happy to go to the break a goal in front. The second half however was all Bansha, as they pinned the Park back time and again in their half. However they have added some experience and steel to their side this year, and the one time the defence was breached, former Irish international goalkeeper Aaron Wall made a magnificent save to preserve their lead. In the end they held out and progressed, and will be a tricky opposition for whoever they come up against in the next round.

Wilderness Rovers 0 – 3 Tipperary Town

With a massive three points up for grabs in this clash between the home side and Tipperary Town, it was the visitors who snaffled the points after a very clinical performance that leaves the Wildies in desperate relegation trouble, even this early in the season. After an even enough start, the visitors opened the scoring in the twelfth minute when an error in the home defence which was punished by the cool finish of Ryan Maher. The hosts tried hard to get back in the game but were dealt another blow when a penalty was awarded to the away side on the half hour mark. Shane Ryan made no mistake from twelve yards out, to give his side a two-goal cushion which they took with them to the break. The second half began with the home side trying hard to get back into the game, but the visitors dealt with most of what was thrown at them easily enough. They made sure of the win twenty two minutes from time when they got a third after breaking the offside trap to see Ivanivic score from twelve yards. Wilderness tried hard to get on the scoresheet and missed two good opportunities late on, and in the end had to give way to their opponents who snagged their first win of the season.

TSDL First Division 15th October 2023 Match Reports

Vee Rovers 4 – 0 Cullen Lattin

Vee Rovers turned over a depleted Cullen Lattin side to record their second win of the season in Clogheen on Sunday afternoon. The visiting side started well and brought some good saves out of the home keeper, but once the hosts settled to their task, they took over the game almost completely. They finally made the breakthrough in the seventeenth minute when Keelan Hogan finished off a cross from Zak Keating, from ten yards out. The rest of the half was a midfield struggle with the home side slightly edging it on chances, but unable to extend their lead. They did do that however five minutes into the second period, when the ever dangerous Keating got behind the Cullen defence to finish from close in. Five minutes later Keating added his second and his sides third as they took complete control of the tie. And they finished it off in the final minutes when Kieran Mackin added a fourth, nodding home a pinpoint cross from Anthony Crotty to put a nice gloss on the score line.

Suirside 2 – 3 Two Mile Borris

Borris’ seconds travelled to Grange on Sunday, and returned home with all three points after coming out the right side of a five-goal thriller. The game started slowly and was very even in general, with the visitors having the first real chance that was missed by inches from a Jack Delaney shot in the sixteenth minute. But the home side finally settled and took the lead in the twenty third minute when Colin O Shaughnessy set up the onrushing John Darmody to power home a shot from distance that gave the Borris keeper no chance. This didn’t the deter the visitors however and five minutes before the break, Richie Mc Carthy had the sides level when he took advantage of hesitation in the home defence to score an excellent goal of his own from just inside the area. It looked like the teams would be going to the break all square but with the home side attacking, the visitors produced a devastating counter attack that finished with DJ Troy turned his marker before finishing brilliantly. The home team started the second period much the brighter and were level again two minutes in, when Andy Hickey capitalised on a defensive error to level the game. After this both sides cancelled each out for large parts of the second half, and the game seemed to be heading for a draw, before Michael Anthony Mc Carthy got the decisive score ten minutes from time. Suirside launched a huge attacking effort after this, but the away team battened down the hatches and took the points in the end.

Rosegreen Rangers 0 – 1 Cashel Town

Cashel Town took the spoils in this local derby, in a game that struggled to get any momentum going for long periods, as the sides cancelled each other out. There was a dearth of chances created by both sides, with the best of the first half falling to the home side, but they were unable to get a ball past Dean Harding who was in excellent form in the Cashel nets. Scoreless at the break, the second half followed a similar pattern until twenty minutes from time Cashel put a dangerous corner into the home area and after a scramble Thomas Riordan applied the finish to put his side in front. Cashel shut up shop after this and were pretty comfortable until the final five minutes when Rosegreen had an effort cleared off the line, leaving the visitors to hang on for all three points in the end.

TSDL Third Division 15th October 2023 Match Reports

Tipperary Town 6 – 0 Killenaule Rovers

A large crowd were served up a real Sunday morning treat at a sun drenched Arra Road, watching their teams biggest win in many a game against a hapless Killenaule side last weekend. Aaron Hickey opened the scoring with a tidy finish just inside the box after some good work down the left side by Jordan Cummins in the eight minute, and a stunning run from Cummins again set up the second with Aaron Hickey turning provider and David Hannigan making no mistake to make it two nil. In a game where the visitors never really got a foot hold and were always on the back foot the two nil scoreline at half time was the least the home side deserved. Things didn’t get any better for the visitors in the second half as within minutes of the restart, the hosts made it three when a Jordan Cummins shot was well saved but Hannigan was sharpest to react and grabbed, his second with a nice finish. A mazy run from Tudor Ignat brought another good save but he finished off the rebound to make it four by the hour mark. A long ball forward to Aaron Hickey ten minutes later caught out the Rovers defence and he set up Adrian Swords to make it five. Cummins who was magnificent all afternoon got the goal his performance deserved, with a twenty five yard strike straight into the bottom corner.

Cahir Park 4 – 1 Burncourt Celtic

The home side came back from being a goal down at the break to take all three points with a big score in the end against near neighbours Burncourt Celtic on Sunday. Although the home side started well they were rocked in the fifteenth minute when Celtic produced a speedy counter attack that saw the home keeper pull off a brilliant save only to see Pa Ryan follow up and shoot to the net from close in. After that the home side battered the visitors goal mouth, but the Burncourt netminder Mark Cagney was in inspired form and got his side to the break a goal to the good. The held out for ten more minutes in the second half, before devastating eight-minute spell saw the home side finally take control of the tie. First Eoghan Corbett headed home from a corner kick in the fifty sixth minute, before Gavin Devereaux added a second five minutes later with a shot from inside the area. Barely had Burncourt a chance to regroup before Hicham Briem added a third, when he came in from the right to slide an effort under the now flailing Cagney in the away goal. Things settled after this, with the Park in control of the game, and they added a final goal five minutes from time when they were awarded a penalty that was despatched to the net by Briem for his second and his sides fourth goal.

Ballingarry Albion 4 – 1 Donohill and District

There was a frantic start to this game with both teams struggling to get the ball down and make any real impact going forward. The game then sprung to life when both teams had a goal ruled out in the space of two minutes around the quarter hour mark, for fouls on the keeper and offside respectively. The home side finally took the lead from the penalty spot in the twenty first minute when Michael Ivors converted a penalty which he won himself. They almost made it two straight after when some excellent play between Ian Ivors and Michael Ivors resulted in Jonothan Ivors going through on goal but he failed to hit the target. The visitors settled though, and finished the half the strongest having four or five corners in a row but unable to convert any of them. The home side came back out with real intent and started to gain more control over the ball. This was rewarded with a goal when Riain O Callaghan was put through and after a heavy touch sent him out wide he rifled a left foot shot into the bottom corner six minutes in. But the two goal lead lasted all of a couple of minutes, when a misplaced pass from defence offered the away side a chance and they converted well to make it two goals to one before the hour mark. But they shot themselves in the foot shortly after this, when they were reduced needlessly to ten men. Albion took advantage making it three goals to one, when Adam O Connell finished to the net after Riain O Callaghan’s initial effort came back off the. The game was them put beyond any doubt when ten minutes from time, when Jonothan Ivors won the ball high up the pitch and produced a quality cross for Michael Ivors (Blondie) to grab his second of the game with a great finish.

The visitors started the second half well and the superb Gus Nolan was denied a goal from a great save by Ben Allen. It took Borris a little while to settle into the second period but when they did, they got their fourth in the sixty fifth minute, when Finn Jones set up Cullen on the wing and he found his way into the box before driving an unstoppable shot past the keeper. TSDL Youths Division 2

Clonmel Town 3 – 1 Cullen Lattin

The two teams faced off in this tie on a perfect day for football, in bright sunshine with no wind. The game was evenly matched in the opening quarter of an hour, with the home side having the best chance when a Paul Maher effort came back off the crossbar. The deadlock was broken in the eighteenth minute with some good play by the hosts down the left, saw Maher cross a dangerous ball into the box which wasn’t fully dealt with by the visiting defense and was pounced on by Jack Burns who clinically finished to the bottom corner. own. Cullen reacted well to going behind and had a few chances cleared away before they finally levelled when Seanie Bourke went on a mazy run to waltz past the home backline and slot past the keeper. That was how the first half ended, but the home team came out with more intent in the early period of the second.
