Tipperary Cup ¼ finals

Cahir Park 2 – 2 Two Mile Borris (AET Borris win 4-3 on penalties)

These two Premier League teams played out a ding dong battle in Cahir on Sunday morning before Borris finally progressed on penalties into the semi-finals of this year’s Tipperary Cup. The away side were on the ball from the beginning having a number of early chances that were spurned, and were hit by a lightening break in the thirteenth minute, to see Willie Dunne gave the hosts the lead, very much against the run of play. After that, both teams settled and had a number of chances, before the away side finally made one count. They were awarded a free kick at the edge of the Cahir area five minutes before the break, and Jamie Lee curled a beauty into the top corner to send the teams to half time all square once more. The second half was much more cagey, and neither team wanted to commit too many to attack, with a subsequent lack of chances and eventually the final whistle was blown on a one all game. Into extra time, the game opened up once more, but it took a set piece to get the next goal. One the stroke of half time in the first half of extra time, Lee once again produced a wonderful free kick, this time from the opposite side of the box, but with the same result, to put Borris in front. And that looked like it was going to be enough to progress until the final minute of the second period, with the home side throwing everything at getting a goal back, Willie Dunne popped up to head home from eight yards and at least give his side a chance with penalty kicks. They got that, but couldn’t take it, with Borris proving the deadlier, winning by four goals to three and taking the first semi final place.

Bansha Celtic 0 – 1 Tipperary Town

Bansha Celtic could have condemned Tipperary Town to relegation if they had got the three points here, but instead it was a gutsy performance from the visitors that has given them another chance to beat the drop, when they won the tie by a single goal. In a cagey game, the away side took the lead on fifteen minutes, when a free kick was awarded on the edge of the box, and Vinny Godfrey curled it into the roof of the net. The hosts had a great chance to equalise shortly after, when a cross from the right was side footed towards goal, but it struck the keeper and rebounded to safety. After that both teams slogged it out, but quality was in short supply and chances in even less, leaving the game to half time with the visitors a goal up. Bansha dominated most of the second period, but Town defended manfully and kept them out time and again. They even had a great opportunity to put the game to bed, when Godfrey was clean through, but he put his shot wide. In the end they didn’t need it, and were more than happy to take the precious three points.

Peter O Reilly Cup, semi finals 28th April 2024 Match Reports

Donohill and District 2 – 0 Tipperary Town

These two teams faced off last Wednesday evening to try to win a place in the Peter O Reilly Cup final and it was a humdinger of a game, with both sides going hell for leather throughout. It was the home side who struck first, in the twenty second minute, when Dinny Crosse was played through in front of goal and he coolly slid the ball past the keeper and into the bottom corner of the net. This spurred on Town, and they should have been level on the half hour mark, when Ray Kelly lobbed the stranded keeper, only to see his effort come back off the cross bar and be cleared away to safety. It was made worse when from that clearance the home side set up a counter attack and Jamie Malone finished it off by scoring a screamer from all of thirty yards to put Donohill two goals up. This seemed to knock the wind out of the visitors and they eventually wilted, finding it hard to create any attacks of note, and Donohill held on easily enough to book a place in final

Clonmel Celtic 1 – 1 SC & K United (AET Clonmel Celtic win on penalties)

This was the fourth meeting of these sides in all competitions this year, and with the visitors having won on the first three occasions, they arrived to Celtic in confident form. In the opening exchanges however, the hosts started well, but were rocked back in the eight minute when a lightening break down the right hand side, saw Kilsheelan take the lead with a well worked goal. Celtic continued to work the ball well and were creating chances to get back level. That pressure paid off ten minutes before the break, when Jamie Hindley got into the box and finished well to put the home team on level terms. The second half was an even affair with the visitors starting the half the brighter and almost getting back in front. Celtic settled and began to put pressure on themselves, creating a number of chances but didn’t capitalise. Eventually there were to be no more goals in regulation time, and the extra time period was a very even affair with defences winning the day, as players tired after the long game. It took penalties to separate the sides and finally the home side were to have some success at the fourth time of asking, when Peter Boland pulled off a fine save to send his side to the final.

TSDL Second Division 28th April 2024 Match Reports

Tuesday 23rd April

Cashel Town 3 – 1 Rosegreen Rangers

Games between these neighbours are always spicy but there was no real cut and thrust to the midweek encounter when the sides met last Tuesday evening. With weather finally improving, Dixie Currivan Park was bathed in sunshine, and the home side opened the scoring on twenty minutes, with goal from Jamie O’Keeffe, when he lashed the ball to the net from six yards out, after a Blake Doyle Carroll cross. But just ten minutes later, the visitors were given the perfect opportunity to hit back, when they were awarded a penalty kick, and Ian Shelly converted to level the scores. But just when it looked like it would be all square at the break, Cashel regained the lead when Blake Doyle Carroll headed home a Jamie O’Keeffe cross. The second period was rather tame, and the hosts made the game safe on the hour mark with a goal from Thomas O’Riordan, after great work from Colin Ryan on the right set O’Riordan up to finish well from ten yards out.

Division Two Shield quarter final Saturday 27th April

St Nicholas 3 – 2 Cashel Town (AET 2 -2 FT)

This was an excellent game that went all the way to extra time to find a winner, before the home side prevailed by the odd goal in five. The Saint’s started well and thought they had gotten an opener, but Aaron Ryan Shiner was denied by an excellent save in the fifth minute. Jason Sutton tested the Cashel keeper shortly afterwards and again the net minder was up to the task. And they were made pay for the misses when ten minutes in, the visitors opened the scoring with a goal against the run of play. A throw in saw the ball played back to Thomas O Riordan and he fired in what looked like a cross, but it took a deflection and beat the keeper to nestle in the home net. But it only took eight minutes for the home side to get back on level terms when Ryan Shiner took on a pass from Sean Daly and slotted the ball to the net with an excellent finish. Just before half time, Cashel regained the lead when Blake Doyle Carroll got in behind the home defence to give his side a half time lead. The hoem team regrouped at half time, and were dominant in the second period, finally levelling the game from the penalty spot, with Declan Riordan scoring after Aaron Ryan Shiner was fouled in the area. The game had no more goals, but in extra time, substitute Michael Maguire found Ryan Shiner with a sweet assist in the second period of extra time, and that was enough to put them through to the semis.
