TSDL Premier League report 3rd September 2023 Match Reports
Cahir Park 1 – 0 Tipperary Town
The two promoted teams faced off at the Park in Cahir, on a morning of bright sunshine and sweltering heat, which it very difficult for the players to keep up any sustained pace throughout the early parts of the game. The home team dominated the early stages of the game without creating anything of note, and what half chances they did create were well kept out by the visitors. The closest either side got to opening the scoring was in the thirty second minute when Cahir’s John O’ Brien hit the post with a fizzing effort, only to see the visiting keeper palm away the rebound shot. Level at the break, the hosts took a deserved lead five minutes into the second period when good play down the Park right, saw Jake Kiely put in a teasing cross to the Tipperary area, and in the subsequent confusion, the attempted clearance ended up in the back of the net for an own goal. The Park controlled the game for most of the rest of the half, and while Town tried hard to get back into the tie, they were not able to fashion any chance of real quality that would get a score for them. This was a second win on the bounce for the home side, who have re-adjusted well to life back in the Premier League so far. For Tipperary Town, they will need to get some result and fast, or they could find themselves in a battle at the wrong end of the table very quickly.
Clonmel Town 7 – 0 Bansha Celtic
After a very difficult week for Clonmel and its surrounding areas, Clonmel Town returned to action with a comprehensive home victory against a very depleted Bansha Celtic side. As early as the fourth minute the hosts hit the front, when Michael O Sullivan turned well on the edge of the box before smashing the ball past Kelvin O Brien in the visitors goal. Further goals in the first half from Jake French Davis (2), then a penalty from Conor O Sullivan who followed it up on the half hour mark with a super strike and Keith Browne made it seven to nil at the break. To be fair to the visitors, Eoghan Byrnes tested Evan Comerford with a great strike from outside the box late in the half, and O Brien pulled off a magnificent save to deny Jake French Davis his hat trick. Town emptied the bench in the second half and the pace dropped as both teams played out the rest of the game without any more goals. Celtic twice tested Evan Comerford through a Tony Egan free and a header from Liam Murphy who did well to get on to an excellent cross from Michael Peters, and the hosts had chances to extend their advantage with Darragh Cronin and Ian Cleary both coming close.

Cullen Lattin 5 – 2 Clonmel Town
Cullen Lattin made it two wins from two as they stand top of the Division One table after the first rounds of games, courtesy of a good win against Clonmel Town’s seconds on Sunday. Aisling Park was looking splendid on a sunny Sunday morning, and the home side got into their groove right from the start, opening the scoring in the opening minutes when Tristan Stokes crossed for Fiachra O Grady to knock a pass into the onrushing Mikey Stokes who made no mistake from close in. Tony O Neill put the hosts two up shortly after, when Stokes became the provider, as the visiting defence was run ragged. And they made it three midways through the half, when Fiachra O Grady took a brilliant pass from Paddy Down, and shot past the Town keeper. Town were down, but not out just yet, and they got back into the game ten minutes before the break when a well struck Darragh Walsh free kick was saved by Bob Doyle in the Cullen goals, but Paul Shanahan was on hand to tap home the rebound. But Cullen restored their three-goal advantage at the break when the livewire O Grady found Tommy O Mahoney in space, and he made no mistake from ten yards out. Midway through the second period, the away side were given life line when another well struck Darragh Walsh free kick went into the bottom corner of the home goal. But Tony O Neill secured all three points for Cullen, when he got into a Darren Hueston through ball, and he finished excellently ten minutes from the end.

Rosegreen Rangers 3 – 4 Moyglass United
These teams were playing their first game of the season at a sun drenched and splendid looking Nijinsky Park in Rosegreen on Sunday morning, and the watching supporters got full value for their money with a seven-goal thriller that was just edged by the visiting side. The game started off at a lively pace for the first ten minutes, with both sides having chances before the home side took the lead when a Seanie Halloran shot from outside box fizzed to the bottom corner of the net. It was one all after twenty-five minutes when Moyglass were awarded and scored a penalty kick, and although both teams continued to create chances for the rest of the half, there were to be no more goals. The hosts got the better start in the second period and retook the lead ten minutes in when Keith Bergin fired home from just inside the visitor’s area, but Moyglass took control for the next fifteen minutes and scored to level on the seventieth minute mark. Five minutes later, Aidan O Connell took advantage of a scramble in the area to poke Rosegreen back in front for the third time in the game, but the visitors finished the stronger and added two goals in the final ten minutes, one a header from a corner kick and a winner that was walloped into the roof of the net from all of twenty yards out to secure the three points.
St Nicholas 2 – 2 Cashel Town
These teams played out an entertaining two all draw at Danny O Dwyer Park in Solohead on Sunday, with both rueing missed chances that might have given them all three points, while happy that both finished with at least a share of the spoils. Cashel took the lead in the eight minute, slightly against the run of play up to that point, when Ryan St John capped a quick breakaway move with a fine finish. Tony Buckley for the hosts was very unlucky not to level the game when he got on the end of a Jason Sutton corner kick, in the twentieth minute, and while both sides created some half chances, there was to be no more scores in the first period. That changed within three minutes of the restart when Jack Downey for the home side was pulled down in the Cashel area, and Jason Sutton made no mistake from twelve yards out with the resulting penalty kick. Four minutes later, the Saints hit the front when Paul Ryan slipped past a static Cashel defence and fired home from twelve yards out, after an excellent assist by Jason Buckley. The game was very even after this, and it looked like the home side might hold on for the win, but Paraic Ryan got behind their back line ten minutes from time to slip a goal in for the visitors that was enough to win them a share of the spoils in the end.

Cahir Park 6 – 0 SC & K United
Cahir Park’s seconds made it two wins from two, with a big win over SC & K United on Sunday morning in Cahir. The home team got off to a flyer when Gavin Deveraux put them ahead after just two minutes, finishing low to the net, after cutting in from the left. Five minutes later the same player made it two, when what looked like a cross looped over the visiting keepers head and nestled in the net at the back post. Just before twenty minutes Leigh Murphy got the goal of the game with a great half volley form edge of the box, to put the home side in complete command. That was all the scoring for the first period, but the home side didn’t let up in the second, and added a fourth when Deveraux completed his hat trick on the hour mark, through a long range free kick that gave the Kilsheelan keeper no chance. In complete control now, that added two more goals in the final fifteen minutes, first when Cormac Crowe finished neatly, and finally when Deveraux made it four for him, and six in total, five minutes from time.
Ballingarry Albion 3 – 0 Killenaule Rovers
Newly returning to the TSDL, Ballingarry Albion got their season off to a winning start against neighbours Killenaule Rovers on Sunday afternoon, when they had a three goals to nil win. They started well, making numerous chances and pinning back their opponents for large parts of the first half. The first big chance fell to the home side, when Adam O Connell found the head of Eoin Burke who hit the post from close range. This close call seemed to wake the away side up and then had a decent spell forcing a number of corners and half chances. But neither side was able to break the deadlock before the half time whistle. The second half was much of the same as the first, with the home side on the front foot and they finally opened the scoring on the hour mark when an Adam O Connell corner found the head of Ricky Cashin and he found the net from close in. With ten minutes left, Cashin robbed the Killenaule defence of the ball, and he played in Ian Ivors who finished past the onrushing keeper. Two soon became three, when the always dangerous O Connell played in Michael Ivors who raced through and rounded the keeper to tap in the insurance goal
Donohill and District 5 – 0 Burncourt Celtic
Donohill hosted Burncourt in the sunshine on Sunday, and were well on top in the game before they opened the scoring in the twentieth minute when Ned Lowry scored with a diving header. Three minutes later, a brilliant cross from Billy Keating was headed home by Sean Stokes, to double the home sides lead. Both teams tried hard in very hot conditions but there were no more goals in first half. In the second period, Burncourt defended very well against incessant home pressure, but on sixty five minutes, Lowry made it three with a fine headed effort. As the visitors tired, the home side created and missed several chances before Burncourt conceded and unfortunate own goal to go four behind. Five minutes from time, some brilliant play from Ned Lowry saw him cheekily chip the visitors keeper to put the cherry on the top of an excellent home win.

TSDL Youths Div 2
Mullinahone 7 – 1 Bansha Celtic
In the sweltering heat of an Indian Summer in September, Mullinahone got their league campaign up and running with a big win at home to a depleted Bansha Celtic side. Both teams found it tough in the first twenty minutes with many passes were going astray, but they still created some half chances without rally troubling either keeper. However, in a whirlwind fifteen minutes around the half hour mark, the home side rattled off five goals that completely turned this tie on its head. The opening goal came when Michael Cuddihy hammered in a free kick into the top corner from all of twenty five yards out, and five minutes later Liam Doyle made it two after Phillip Dunnes surgical pass split the defence for Liam to finish past the onrushing keeper. Doyle then grabbed his second shortly after, when he fired home from the edge of the box. Three became four when Michael Cuddihy got his second, after being put through by Phillip Dunne and Mullinahone hit a fifth shortly before the break when Adam Doyle played in Adam Houlihan who slotted the ball to the net. To the away sides credit, they came out of the blocks quickly and showed no signs of giving up in the second period, and had the better of the exchanges for the first quarter of an hour. But th home side were relentless and added a sixth four minutes after the hour mark when Phillip Dunne finished off an Adam Doyle assist. The visitors got a deserved goal in the seventieth minute, when a fantastic free kick was flicked home, but any chance of a comeback was quickly put to bed when Dunne again turned provider to spring John Carroll through and he emphatically finished with a bullet into the top corner.
Galbally United 1 – 2 Clonmel Town
Clonmel Town have entered two Youths teams into TSDL action this season, and their seconds got off to a winning start away to a good Galbally United outfit on Saturday afternoon. They opened the scoring in the twentieth minute when Jack Burns got in behind to the home defence to finish from twelve yards, and the same player added a second ten minutes before the break to give his side a two nil lead at half time. The home side battled back in the second period and pulled a goal back three minutes after the hour mark, but in the end, despite a lot of pressure from Galbally, they were unable to find an equaliser and Town took the points.
