Tipperary Town 0 – 5 St Michael’s
Saints took all the points in the other derby game of the weekend at Arra Road in Tipperary town, to keep up their bid to regain the Premier League title, on what was a rainy day with soft under foot conditions. In complete control now, the visitors pretty much made the points certain when they added a third in the twentieth minute, with Ed O’Dwyer heading home an Ashley Kelliher cross. The home side had their best chance of the game on the half hour when Ryan Maher got in from a right angled cross, but shot straight at Adrian Walsh. Rhys O’Regan then had an effort saved and again Eric Higgins pushed a strong effort from him over the crossbar. Russell Quirke with a shot and Cian Fadden with a header went close before the break but Saints were in control with their movement and passing and went in with a comfortable half time lead. The second period followed a similar pattern to the first, with the league leaders having the majority of possession and chances, and added a fourth just after the hour mark, when DJ Cremins executed a beautiful lob from the right hand side of the area, which beat goalkeeper Eric Higgins. David Slattery added a fifth fourteen minutes from time, with a low shot to the net. Mikey Nash had a shot saved by Higgins late on but the game was long over as a contest, and the Saints continued their title challenge with three more points in the bag.

The game was only a minute old when the deadlock was broken, with Sean Browne firing low to the corner to give the hosts the lead. They doubled that advantage on the quarter hour mark, when Browne struck again, this time firing a fine half volley to the net with the Town keeper rooted to the spot. When Darren Sweeney headed home on twenty eight minutes it looked a case of damage limitation for the visitors as Celtic went to the break three goals to the good. Early in the second half Philip Drohan saw his effort scrambled off the line but the respite was brief for Town as Cian O’Sullivan scored from close range to make it four. Town battled away but Celtic didn’t have to be at their best as they ran out comfortable winners.

Cullen and Galbally played out an eleven goal thriller in the only first Division Shield game that went ahead on Sunday afternoon, before the home side took the spoils on the day. They continued their scoring exploits early in the second period when a Darren Mc Grath cross found the head of Tony O Neill to put them five to three in front. The visitors didn’t drop the heads however and a Jordan Dineen double drew the game level once again. They Clonmel side came out firing in the second period and pulled a goal back eight minutes in, when Dylan Kiely found the bottom corner from just inside the home area. Conor Grant in the Kilsheelan goal was in fine form all afternoon, with two huge saves within a five-minute period to maintain the host’s lead. Firstly, getting a finger-tip save from a dangerous Celtic set-piece delivery which took a deflection, before the getting down low to save from a cross that also took a deflection off one of the United defenders. Those saves proved vital, as just moments after the second, Kilsheelan made it three to one when John O’ Dywer headed home at the back post from a Nathan Dolan in-swinging cross, to put themselves firmly back in control.
