Munster Youth Cup Round 3 Saturday 09-11-24

Two Mile Borris 4-4 Cahir Park (AET) 11-12 pens

Two Mile Borris and Cahir Park played out an eight-goal thriller in Newhill on Saturday.

Both teams looked very dangerous from the off, creating plenty of chances and the home side should have been in front after seven minutes when Lorcan Bourke was played through on goal, but he fired wide from close range. Cahir Park then took the lead against the run of play on 15 minutes following a swift counterattack. Borris weren’t behind for long, though, and levelled just two minutes later through Tristan Troy after a corner kick wasn’t dealt with by the Cahir defence.

Both teams created plenty of chances for the next 15 minutes and Cahir found themselves ahead again after some poor defending by the home side allowed the Cahir striker to run through from a good distance out and he finished well. Borris struck back quickly again, this time through Cian O’Dwyer as he fired home from close range after the Cahir goalkeeper had pulled off a fine save.

Borris began the second half well and were in front after 65 minutes after Lorcan Bourke was fouled in the box, and he stepped up himself to fire home the penalty.

Cahir Park then went in search of an equaliser and put the home side under plenty of pressure for the last 20 minutes and with only a few minutes left to play put a lovely move together when their attacker swivelled his way past three players and slipped the striker through and once again he finished well. After a pulsating 90 minutes, the score finished 3-3, and extra was needed. Borris got off to a great start taking the lead after just four minutes when a lovely cross from the right by Ryne Bargary found the head of Conor Ryan, who headed home smartly to put the home side back in front.

Again, Cahir came back strong and pushed for another equaliser, which they got with just two minutes left on the clock. With the teams still deadlocked after extra time, it was penalties to decide this game. Fittingly enough, it took 30 penalties to separate these two teams who served up a fantastic game with Cahir eventually getting over the line 12-11 on penalties.

Youths Division 2 Saturday 09-11-24

St Michaels 4-0 Kilsheelan

Alfie O Halloran completed his second hat-trick in seven days to help St Michael’s to a 4-0 victory. In a one-sided contest Darragh Brennan added his name to the scoresheet to round off the scoring on a good day for St Michael’s.

2-0 up at half time Bresnan struck from the penalty spot before O’Halloran added a fourth.

Shanbally 3-2 Cullen Lattin

Shanbally faced Cullen for the second time in two weeks, but this game was very different to the previous encounter. Cullen had a lot to prove to themselves and they came at Shanbally from the start, forcing two good saves from Cian Carroll early on. Shanbally soon settled and good work from Conor English set Pa Hennessy on his way and he fired the ball into the net on 15 minutes. Five minutes later Shanbally were two up with the same players involved but this time it was English who finished with a good strike from 12 yards into the bottom corner. Shanbally played their best football of the day until half time but couldn’t get another goal.

The second half started slow and both teams were giving the ball away, but Cullen were winning more 50/50s and kept the ball better and were rewarded when Javier Serrano scored after Cian Carroll had saved the initial penalty. Cullen’s tails were up and Shanbally panicked a bit, and they got a second penalty after a handball. Again, Cian Carroll guessed right but he just couldn’t keep Ciaran Brogan’s strike out.

This woke Shanbally up again and in the final minutes they got on top and forced some corners and with less than three minutes to go Jack Sullivan took a corner which was cleared but the ball came back to him and he hit a bullet of a shot in to the top corner.

Galbally 4-3 Mullinahone

Galbally had to dig deep in the latter stages of this gripping contest to claim all three points.

William Ryan looked to have made the game safe when he put Galbally 4-1 ahead with just 20 minutes left on the clock. A brace from Philip Dunne late on, to add to his earlier effort, made the last few minutes very interesting but his hat-trick wasn’t enough to earn Mullinahone anything from the game.

Tiernan Ryan and Killian Peters had put Galbally in control ealy in the game but Mullinahone never gave in and their response to going 4-1 down will please their management team.

St Michaels 1-0 Clonmel Celtic

An early David Slattery goal was enough to give St Michaels victory in a keenly contested tie with Clonmel Celtic last Saturday night. Celtic were very much still in this tie on the hour mark but a combination of tiredness and a second yellow card for Kevin Hawkins saw their challenge fade.

The away side would have known that St Michael’s start games quickly and have amassed a lot of early goals this season. Despite this Celtic fell behind on six minutes. It came from a long punt forward from the St Michael’s defence. The ball wasn’t properly cleared, and Philip Drohan was on hand to pick up the loose ball and his centre was converted at the far post by David Slattery to give the home side the lead.

Celtic’s response to this early set back was positive and they then had a good period. On 9 minutes Sean Hawkins flashed a shot wide and three minutes later the lively Rory O’Dowd did well to win the ball and then charged at the Michaels rear guard before setting up Darren Sweeney who fired narrowly wide. Kyle Cuddy, whose hold up play was excellent all night, found himself in space in a good position on 16 minutes and his effort saw Kuba Beeban scramble across his goal to push his shot to safety. After having a bit of a wobble, the pendulum swung back to St Michael’s as they now enjoyed a good spell with Jimmy Carr on two occasions in the 22nd and 23rd minute failing to find the target from good positions.

The home side were moving the ball around nicely and some crisp passing released Jimmy Carr on 25 minutes but his centre was cleared. Philip Drohan then forced Fabian Kerton into a full length save on 26 minutes as the home side looked for a second. Celtic held on and finished the half well with Kuba Beeban getting down to save Darren Sweeney’s free kick just before the break. Whereas the first half saw periods where each got on top the second period started as a more end to end tussle. Shane Ryan fired over a short free kick routine on 53 minutes. At the other end Celtic were incensed not to have won a penalty when a goal bound effort from Darren Sweeney appeared to strike a defender’s hand. They had a bigger grievance three minutes later when Kevin Hawkins collided with Jimmy Carr as they both chased a through ball and was given a second yellow that ended his night and was a significant blow to an already tiring Celtic. Not surprisingly more chances came St Michael’s way with Shane Ryan heading over from a corner and Colin Bargary trying an effort from distance that wasn’t too far off target. When they did manage to find the target, they were repelled by the excellent Fabian Kerton who produced an excellent diving save to deny Mark O’Keeffe before producing an even better point blank save from Luke Kiely with Mark O’Keeffe blazing the loose ball over. Celtic who looked dead on their feet after producing a tremendous fighting effort rallied as we entered the final moments. David Morrissey did well on the left to win a ball and square to Kyle Cuddy who was just off target with his effort before Morrissey himself tried his luck on 87 minutes, but his effort failed to trouble Beeban. The game ended with every player in the St Michael’s box to face a Celtic corner that was scrambled away, and the referee then blew the final whistle. An important win for St Michael’s and an admirable effort from a Celtic side who ran themselves into the ground. If they can cut out one or two errors that always seemed punished in these big games, you would expect that it won’t be long until they will be challenging again judging by the age profile on their bench and assured performances from their youth players who were thrown in at the deep end in the second half and more than held their own.

Sunday the 10th November 2024 Premier League

Peake Villa 3-0 Clonmel Town

Peake Villa entertained Clonmel Town in this league encounter at the Tower Grounds and came away with three crucial points. Villa started on the front foot and were rewarded with an excellent strike from Pippy Carroll after just three minutes. The rest of the half was even enough as both defences were on top.

The second half again saw Villa on the front foot and were looking dangerous going forward and after good play between Kian Mitchell and Darragh Byrne saw a teasing cross come shot from Mitchell find its way to the back of the net to put Villa 2-0 up. Town never gave up but found the back line of veteran Alan Leahy and Sean Condron stubborn to break down. Villa settled the game in injury time when a Pippy Carroll free kick was spilled into the path of Robbie Stapleton and he made no mistake. Best on the day were Alan Leahy and Kian Mitchell.

Two Mile Borris 3-2 Cahir Park

In a hard-fought game in Newhill Park, Borris came out on top by the odd goal in five against Cahir Park. This was a game that could have gone either way with several chances created. Borris took the lead on 20 minutes when Danny Rafter finished well after a great passing move through Urban Nolan and Lewis Kearney. Cahir put a lot of pressure on but the Borris defence led by Loarn O’Toole with a man of the match performance kept firm and Borris went in 1 nil up at half time.

Borris doubled their advantage five minutes into the second half when Lewis Kearney broke through and calmly finished under the Cahir keeper. Ben Allen made a number of fine saves in the Borris goal before having to go off injured on the hour mark. Cahir got back into the game in the 70th minute with a good finish from Willie Dunne. The away side went in search of the equaliser and had the Borris defence under pressure, but the home side eased that pressure in the 75th minute when Jamie Lee broke clear on the left and chipped a great shot over the Cahir keeper to make it 3-1. Cahir fought back and Danny O’Brien made it 3-2 in the 85th minute. Despite pressure from Cahir the Borris defence held out for a great three points with many players out injured and stay in joint second spot in the table.

Sunday the 10th November 2024 Division 1

Powerstown 0-3 Two Mile Borris (B)

Two Mile Borris B claimed a commanding 3-0 victory over Powerstown. Two goals from Lorcan Bourke and one from Jack Delaney were enough to see the away side secure all three points. Powerstown’s opportunities were few and far between, a free-kick chance in the second half the pick of the bunch. Kieran Quirke made several important saves for Powerstown but Two Mile Borris’ quality proved too much for the newly promoted side to handle.
Powerstown looked promising early on when John Allan Lowes broke through on goal, but his effort went to the right and wide. Two Mile Borris quickly put Powerstown under pressure, forcing a turnover in their half and setting up a close-range shot that Kieran Quirke saved brilliantly. After a near-miss from a corner, Borris capitalised in the 34th minute, with a long throw-in bouncing in the box and Lorcan Bourke finishing from close range to make it 1-0.
Powerstown’s best chance came from an Eddie Sweeney free-kick that found Mark Olney, whose shot was saved around the post by the Borris keeper. Two Mile Borris kept pressing and in the 57th minute, Jack Delaney extended their lead with a clinical header after a well-placed cross from the left. Bourke rounded off the scoring in the 70th minute, again from a cross. This time he connected with a cross from the right to secure his second goal and seal the 3-0 win for the away side.

Cullen Lattin 6-0 Peake Villa (B)

Peake villa started the better pressing Cullen high up the pitch and catching Cullen with the ball over the top and were unlucky not to score.

But on 26 minutes a great run from Darren McGrath, who cut in along the end line and squared the ball to Max Reardon to slot home.

On 36 minutes Cullen’s Josh Flannery forced a great save from the Villa keeper and again on 42 minutes Flannery shot over from close range when he should have hit the target.

Cullen started the second half brightly, pressing the Villa defence high up and were rewarded on 58 minutes when Darren McGrath cut in from the right and unselfishly squared it to Tony O’Neill to slot home to put Cullen two up.

Cullen’s Darren Hueston produced a good safe on 63 minutes from a well hit Mark Lennon free kick.  On 68 minutes Cullen went 3-0 up when Mikey Stokes squared well for Darren McGrath to tap home. On 73 minutes some good link up play saw Mikey Stokes and Dylan McGrath combine and McGrath found the unmarked Bernard Fitzgerald to slot home calmly.

Fitzgearld got his second when Darren McGrath’s well delivered cross was headed home on 83 minutes. Darren McGrath got the 6th in the 89th minute when a long ball from Cullen’s goalie Darren Hueston was lifted over the Peake Villa keeper excellently by Darren McGrath.

Sunday the 10th November 2024 Division 2

St Michaels (B) 4-5 Ballingarry

Ballingarry started the better side controlling the tempo and on four minutes had a dangerous free which was well defended by Saints’ Antonio Rea at the back post. St Michael’s hit the front soon after when Colm O’Grady won the ball in midfield and his pass wide to Niall Hallissey who got to the end line and pulled the ball back for a neatRea finish. Ballingarry settled back down and Adrian Maher from 30 yards forced a great save from Falon Doyle at full stretch tipping over the bar. The resulting corner saw a header from Ian Ivors narrowly over.

On 25 minutes Ballingarry drew level through Keith Cleere. Saints hit back and got ahead on 31minutes after some great Jamie Malon footwork in the box saw him pick out  Evan Hanrahan at the back post. On 34 minutes Antonio Rea, pressing high, nicked the ball off a Ballingarry defender before setting up Evan Hanrahan to tap in for his second of the day.

On 46 minutes Ballingarry had a dangerous free which found its way through a crowded box and all the way narrowly past the far post. Cleere then reduced the deficit when his curling left foot strike found the back of the Saints net.

St Michael’s restored their two-goal advantage on 60 minutes through the lively Evan Hanrahan but were dealt a blow in the 75th minute when they were reduced to 10 men.

Ballingarry looked to get back into the game and on 80 minutes were awarded a penalty for a push in the area, allowing Stephen Holohan to slot home. Ballingarry were back in the game now and with a young Saints side starting to tire, Rian O’Callghan got Ballingarry level.

With the game in injury time, Saints looked to hold tough but on 93 minutes a Ballingarry cross from the end line was turn into the saints net by a recovering defender.

Suirside 1-2 Kilsheelan

League leaders Kilsheelan United visited Grange on Sunday morning last to play Suirside in the Division 2 League. This was a fantastic game from start to finish with neither team giving any quarter. Suirside had the better of the early exchanges forcing a number of corners.

A corner on 17 minutes found Brian White whose header beat Conor Grant in the Kilsheelan goal and the following clearance was somehow deemed to not have crossed the line. Undeterred Suirside pushed forward, and Tom Keating forced a fine save from Grant on 24 minutes. Kilsheelan United enjoyed a good spell with the offside flag denying two particularly good opportunities for Ben Smith and Billy O’Connor. On 36 minutes John O’Dwyer put narrowly wide one on one with the very quickly advancing Daniel Hayde and Hayde was once again on hand to smother a further one on one opportunity from Shane Gartland with six minutes of the half remaining.

From the start of the second half Suirside took control and were very unlucky not to hit the front with efforts from Dylan Price on 47 minutes, Brian White on 49 minutes and a great stop from Grant on 54 minutes from Tommy McDonagh. Then came the breakthrough on 61 minutes when both John Darmody and Price broke the offside trap for Darmody to round the keeper and find the net giving the home side the lead. The lead only lasted seven minutes when Tommy O’Connor placed a clever ball into the path of Shane Gartland who calmly equalised.

Suirside pressed on and were wasteful with the final ball or rushed with shooting. Kilsheelan rang the changes to try and get a foothold in midfield and get impetus upfront.

However, it was Suirside’s Paul Kennedy who was very unlucky when beating the keeper to the ball and a David Rencontre long range effort troubled Grant in the goal. Then at the death two rare and quick corners in succession saw a melee in the Suirside penalty area and the ball somehow squirted through to Cian Roche who bundled the ball over the line on 89 minutes to give Kilsheelan United the win and a very valuable three points in what is proving to be the most competitive division in the TS&DL.

Old Bridge 0-1 Cashel Town (B)

A deserved three points for Cashel Town after their victory over Old Bridge in Green Lane. The first half was full of endeavour from both sides but was devoid of any real good football or chances created. The Bridge had one excellent chance to score but failed to avail of it, and this was to prove costly as the game wore on. The second period started off similarly to the first, but the Bridge seemed to wilt and run out of ideas, and they were punished in the 60th minute when Dean Harding cushioned a great header to the net to put Cashel one up. Old Bridge found themselves in deeper trouble when they were reduced to ten men when they had a player dismissed for a second yellow card. They fought on bravely but never looked like scoring while Cashel squandered two glorious chances to wrap the game up, but they needn’t have worried and, in the end, ran out deserving winners.

Moyglass 0-4 St Nicholas

A straightforward three points for the away side on a day when Moyglass simply did not show up. St Nicholas took an early lead on seven minutes when James Scanlon powerfully headed home a superb cross from the right. They doubled their lead on 20 mins when Aaron Blanch curled in a left footer to the far top corner. Moyglass just couldn’t get a flow to their game but did have a few good chances in the middle of the half when Jamie Morrissey and Jack Gleeson both went close from the edge of the box. St Nicolas got a third on 40mins when Sean Daly finished off from close range following a free kick. 0-3 half time.

The away side put the game to bed inside a minute of the restart when Jack Redigan bundled the ball home after some good build up play down the left. Moyglass did improve after that but failed to break down a well organized defense. A well deserved win for the away side who performed very well on the day.

Sunday the 10th November 2024 Division 3

Clonmel Celtic (B) 2-2 Donohill & District

Clonmel Celtic started the first 15 minutes strong with plenty of possession but some very good defending from Donohill kept them scoreless.

However, on 30 minutes, a breakaway against the run of play saw Donohill hit the front when Joe Shanahan finished well. Five minutes later Celtic levelled the game when a great Cillian O’Brien shot from the edge of the box found the net. Five minutes before half time Celtic were caught again on the break and Donohill scored again through Brian Buckley to lead 2-1 at the break.

The second half started off lively with Celtic looking for an equaliser. Chances arrived for both sides, but it was Celtic who were pushing forward in search of an equaliser.

On 80 minutes Celtic were awarded a penalty for an infringement in the box that saw Donohill reduced to 10 men. Jack Aylward slotted the penalty home to level the game. The last 10 mins saw Celtic pushing hard for a winner but some fantastic saves from the Donohill keeper kept them out to earn his side a good point.

Burncourt Celtic 6-0 Tipperary Town (B)

The opening 30 minutes of the game were scrappy with no one really dominating. Celtic hit the front on 35 minutes when James Mulcahy finished from close range. Just five minutes later Mulcahy doubled his and Celtic’s tally when Dylan Fitzgerald cleverly knocked down a cross into his path and Mulcahy made no mistake from six yards.

Burncourt took over in the second half and began to dominate and Pa Ryan beat two defenders on the edge of the box and fired a fine strike into the bottom corner from 16 yards on 55 minutes to make it 3-0. Now it was all Burncourt and Ryan again added his second and Burncourt’s fourth with another nice strike from the edge of the area. 0n 72 minutes Sean Grogan deflected a Ben Doyle strike into the net to make it five. With time almost up, Cian O’Reilly, who was a constant threat all game, cut in off his left wing, beating the Tipp defender and hit a rocket of a shot into the net from 16 yards to make the final score 6-0.

SC&K United (B) 2-5 Cahir Park (B)

Despite starting well and creating some good chances, SC&K United fell behind when a long ball over the top found Niall Daly who made no mistake to give Cahir the lead. SC&K United didn’t get their heads down and with a lovely through ball by Daniel Condon, Ben Power rounded the keeper and finished to make 1-1 at half time. Cahir came out with all guns blazing in the second half and scored two quick goals to make it 3-1 through Niall Daly and Kealan Darcy. SC&K United kept playing football and were back in the game when Daniel Condon hit a wonder volley from 25 yards that lobbed the keeper to make it 3-2.

SC&K United continued to apply pressure on Cahir, making the Cahir keeper work on a number of occasions but just couldn’t find the net. Cahir got a soft fourth goal which killed the game through Conor Murphy, then added another to make it 5-2 from Jake Buckley. The final score was harsh on the home side, but clinical finishing proved the difference.
