A Tribute from the Tipperary Southern & District League
There are few people who can truly be described as having transformed a sport within their community. Tom Lewis is undoubtedly one of them.
After more than fifty years of unwavering dedication to grassroots football, Tom has retired as Honorary Secretary of the Tipperary Southern & District League (TSDL), bringing to a close one of the most remarkable periods of voluntary service in Irish football.
For over five decades, Tom devoted countless hours to ensuring that football in South Tipperary was organised, progressive and built on the principles of fairness, integrity and opportunity. His influence extended far beyond fixtures and committee meetings. He helped shape clubs, develop facilities, support volunteers and create opportunities for generations of players.
His legacy will continue to benefit football in South Tipperary for many years to come.
From a Chance Conversation to a Lifetime of Service
Tom’s journey into football began in 1972 through what seemed an ordinary visit to the barber. During a haircut with Tony Cusse, Honorary Secretary of St. Michael’s AFC, Tom was invited to attend a committee meeting. Having never previously been involved in soccer, he accepted the invitation.
That decision would change football in South Tipperary forever.
Tom quickly became Honorary Treasurer of St. Michael’s and played an important role during one of the club’s most successful periods, helping establish the administrative foundations that supported success on the pitch at provincial and national level.
Building the Tipperary Southern & District League
Recognising that football in South Tipperary needed stronger local organisation, Tom joined fellow football enthusiasts Liam Delahunty, Peter O’Reilly and Richard Power in establishing the Tipperary Southern & District League in 1977.
The early years were challenging. Several of the county’s leading clubs continued to compete in neighbouring leagues. Through exceptional organisation, consistency and professionalism, Tom helped build confidence in the new league.
Within only a few years, clubs returned home, recognising the quality of administration and the vision that the new league provided.
The TSDL rapidly developed into one of the best organised junior football leagues in Ireland.
Championing Grassroots Football Nationally
Tom’s abilities soon became recognised well beyond South Tipperary.
He served with distinction on the Munster Football Association before representing provincial football within the Football Association of Ireland for more than thirty years.
Throughout his service he became one of the strongest advocates for grassroots football and rural clubs. At a time when many national committees were dominated by Dublin representation, Tom consistently argued that provincial leagues deserved equal recognition and support.
His determination helped secure greater representation for provincial football, improved opportunities for rural clubs and increased recognition for players outside the major urban centres.
His service included:
- President of the Munster Football Association (1997–2000)
- President of the FAI Junior Council (2000–2003)
- Member of the FAI Senior Council
- Service on Finance, Youth and Domestic Football Committees
- Honorary Life Member of the Football Association of Ireland
Despite these prestigious positions, Tom always remained committed to the football community where it all began.
A League Built on Integrity
Those who worked alongside Tom will remember his attention to detail, fairness and unwavering commitment to doing things properly.
For more than forty years he worked closely with Honorary Treasurer Richard Power. Together they ensured the league operated to the highest standards while carefully managing its finances.
Their stewardship enabled almost €400,000 in grants to be distributed to member clubs, alongside significant low-interest loans that helped improve football facilities throughout South Tipperary.
Many of today’s excellent club grounds and facilities owe much to the careful financial management and long-term vision of Tom Lewis, Richard Power and the many volunteers who served alongside them.
Recognising the Volunteers
No league succeeds through the efforts of one individual alone.
Tom was always the first to acknowledge the commitment of fellow officers and volunteers who dedicated thousands of hours to football administration over many decades.
Special recognition is due to Richard Power, Mickey Halpin, Christy Aylward and the many Board members, club officers and volunteers whose commitment helped establish the TSDL as one of Ireland’s leading junior football leagues. Their contribution deserves lasting recognition.
Family First
Although football occupied much of his life, Tom never lost sight of what mattered most.
A devoted husband to Mary and proud father to Elizabeth, Joanne and John, family always came before football.
Those who know Tom understand that his humility matched his achievements. He sought neither publicity nor recognition. He rarely gave interviews, avoided the spotlight, never sought financial reward and quietly dedicated himself to serving the game he loved.
A Fitting Farewell
Tom officially retired as Honorary Secretary at the TSDL Annual General Meeting on 23 June 2026.
Representatives from every affiliated club attended to pay tribute, while the Chairman and Secretary of the Munster Football Association, Lesley Doyle and Barry Cotter, presented Tom with an inscribed silver tray in recognition of his extraordinary service to grassroots football.
Acting Honorary Secretary Gay Lowry delivered an emotional reflection on more than fifty years of shared service, while Tom himself thanked the many club secretaries he had worked alongside over the decades, describing them as the lifeblood of every football club.
In a fitting conclusion to an exceptional career, delegates from every club rose together to give Tom a prolonged standing ovation.
It was a moment that reflected not only respect for a great administrator, but genuine gratitude for a lifetime dedicated to football.
A Legacy That Will Endure
Few individuals leave a legacy that will continue to shape their sport long after they retire.
Tom Lewis has done exactly that.
His vision, leadership and integrity helped establish football in South Tipperary on foundations that remain strong today. Thousands of players, coaches, referees, volunteers and supporters have benefited from his tireless work, often without ever knowing the countless hours invested behind the scenes.
The Tipperary Southern & District League enters a new era because of the foundations laid by Tom and the volunteers who served beside him.
The League sincerely thanks Tom Lewis for over fifty years of extraordinary service and wishes him, Mary and the entire Lewis family every happiness and good health in the years ahead.
His contribution to football in South Tipperary will never be forgotten.
