FAI Youth Inter-League Cup
TSDL 4 WEST WATERFORD/EAST CORK 1
The TSDL secured their opening points in the FAI Youth Inter-League Cup, with a confidence boosting victory against West Waterford/East Cork at Celtic Park, Clonmel last Saturday.
The TSDL took the lead in the 37 minute when a long clearance from Luke Trimble found Ashley Laslett and he showed determination and close ball control avoiding three despairing tackles before beating the ‘keeper from a very acute angle.
Two minutes later, Rory Maher drilled the ball low into the corner of the goal through a crowd of players after the visitors failed to clear their lines giving the TSDL a 2-0 interval lead.
The WWEC were thrown a life-line in the 67 minute when a free-kick by David Williams saw TSDL ‘keeper Liam Lanigan; a mere spectator the majority of this game; misjudge the flight of the ball as it came down off the underside of the crossbar and was bundled over the line.
The TSDL quickly regained that two-goal advantage in the 72 minute. From a Darren McGrath strike, ‘keeper Brian Aherne produced a brilliant diving save pushing the ball around the post for yet another corner-kick. From an Ashley Laslett in-swinger an alert Darren McGrath was on hand to finish from close range.
The TSDL made it 4-1 in the 84 minute when John Carew coolly sent the ‘keeper the wrong way from the penalty spot after Michael Connolly was illegally stopped, following a penetrating run into the penalty area.
With the Kilkenny League drawing 1-1 with Waterford, it means that only victory against the Cats will do if the TSDL are to progress to the knock-out stages.
